Bridging the Confucian disconnect | Understanding "κΌ°λ" | Personal reflections
Why This Matters Now More Than Ever
We're living in an age where Korea has one of the lowest fertility rates in the world. Soon, we're going to have more elderly people than ever before. Instead of treating this as just a problem, I want to build infrastructure that amplifies their voices. That celebrates what they know. That learns from who they are.
Our culture has always had Confucianism at its core. Filial piety, respect for elders, these weren't just nice ideas. They were central to how we lived. But that's changing. Western influences and modern thinking have diluted some of these traditions. And look, there are pros and cons to respecting elders. Some traditions need to evolve. But we're throwing out something valuable too.
The simple truth is: elderly people carry wisdom and lived history that we can't find anywhere else. We can learn from them. If we're willing to listen.
π€ Understanding "κΌ°λ" Culture
These days, there's this term "κΌ°λ" (kkondae). It's basically a way to label older people as outdated, irrelevant, or out of touch. I get where it comes from. Sometimes older perspectives can feel rigid or stubborn. Sometimes the generation gap feels real.
But these terms unnecessarily limit our ability to actually communicate with elders. Yes, they might move slower. Yes, conversations might not always be exciting. But dismissing an entire generation because they're different? That's how we lose the wisdom right in front of us.
ποΈ We Study Ancient Wisdom Everywhere Except Here
Think about it. We study ancient Rome, ancient Greece, ancient Egypt, the Mayans, all for their wisdom. We read their texts. We analyze their philosophies. We dig up their artifacts.
But we ignore the ancient wisdom that's right here. Right in front of us. Living, breathing people who survived wars, built this country from poverty, and witnessed history that no textbook captures. They're libraries of human experience. And most of them will die without anyone listening to their stories.
What I Learned From My Elders
I've sat down with my grandparents. I've talked to elderly people at community centers. I've listened to stories that textbooks would never tell. Stories of war, poverty, resilience, hope. These aren't just memories. They're living history.
Every wrinkle tells a story. Every pause holds a memory. And here's the thing: if I didn't exist to document these stories, if someone like me didn't care enough to listen, these voices would disappear. Just like that. Gone forever.
That's why I do this. Without people like me, there would be fewer Mayan voices heard, fewer autistic voices understood, and fewer elderly voices preserved. That's my role. To make sure voices that would otherwise be forgotten get amplified.
We are nothing without our history. As Korean people, we should be proud of where we came from. We should give our elders a chance to share their perspectives, because their stories inform both our present and our future. Their wisdom is the foundation we're building on, whether we realize it or not.
